The Solar Cooker Japan (SCJ) is an organization established voluntarily by some Japanese from various fields such as a public servant, scholars, artists, students, and solar cooker lovers.／ソーラークッカー・ジャパン（SCJ）は自主的に立ち上がった組織で、公務員や学者、芸術家や学生、ソーラークッカー愛好者といった各種分野の日本人に支えられています。
Considering the importance of stopping deforestation in Africa and providing alternative cooking tools for especially impoverished people, we set up SCJ in February of 2007 and started to distribute information on solar cookers to African countries such as Kenya and Rwanda. Additionally, we are conducting a feasibility study on a new balloon type solar cooker, which was invented in Japan and the inventor is a member of SCJ. We have created a partnership with the Solar Cookers International East African Branch (SCIEA) located in Nairobi, and they have conducted the study in order to find out the applicability of the new cooker to eastern African countries.／アフリカにおいて森林減少を止めることの重要性に鑑み、また、特に貧しい人々に代替の調理器具を提供するため、私たちは2007年２月にSCJを設立し、ケニヤやルワンダといったアフリカ諸国にソーラークッカーの情報を提供することを始めました。加えて、私たちは新しいタイプのバルーン式のソーラークッカーの実証実験を行っており、そのクッカーは日本で開発され、開発者はSCJのメンバーです。私たちは、ナイロビに位置しているソーラークッカーズ・インターナショナル東アフリカ支所（SCIEA）と提携することとし、彼らがその新しいクッカーの東アフリカ諸国での適合性を検証するため研究を行いました。
The followings are the key activities performed in 2008 and the rough 2009 plan／次の点が2008年に実施された主要活動と、2009年の大まかな計画です：
1. Study on the balloon cooker／バルーン・クッカーの調査
– Thanks to the information provided by SCIEA, we have learnt that we need some improvements for the balloon cooker such as reinforcement of the sealing parts of the rubber, changing the size and the weight, and creation of a useful support for cooking pans. Thus, we have agreed that we need to prepare the next version of prototype if we were to continue the study with SCIEA. Further, due to this reason, we have made a decision that the balloon cooker feasibility study in Kenya will have a pause until the next prototype becomes ready. The remaining feasibility study budget is kept by SCIEA and we asked them to continue to use the current prototype as long as they do not consume the study funds.／SCIEAから提供された情報のおかげで、バルーン・クッカーについて改善が必要であることが分かりました。例えば、ゴムの接続部の補強や、大きさや重量の変更、調理鍋用に便利な支柱の製作といった点です。そのため、SCIEAと試験を続けるのであれば、次の版の試作品を用意する必要があることで同意しました。さらに、上記の事情から、次号の試作機が準備されるまで、ケニアでのバルーン・クッカーの実証実験は一時停止することとしました。実証実験費用の残金はSCIEAが管理しており、その資金を切り崩さない限り、現在彼らに提供しているバルーン・クッカーは継続して使用して構わない旨をSCIEAに伝えました。
2. Solar cooker marketing opportunities／ソーラー・クッカーの販売機会
– Mainly through the info available at the SCJ website, different companies from South Africa, US, Australia, Togo, and so forth approached SCJ by showing interests to purchase solar cookers in Japan. However, SCJ could not support to make the real business contract. For example, in case of Togo, we could not confirm the existence of the potential buyer there, although they approached us through a broker in Togo. There seem to be some business fraud in Africa, so we need to be aware of the risk well. However, as long as any relating info to the solar cooker available, I, as the SCJ president, would like to make the info open to the SCJ supporters as much as possible.／主にSCJのウェブ・サイト通じ、南ア、アメリカ、オーストラリアやトーゴなどの国の異なる企業から日本のソーラー・クッカーを購入したいとの相談がSCJにありました。しかし、具体的な商談の成立をSCJが支援することはできませんでした。例えば、トーゴの事例では、トーゴの仲介人がSCJに接触してきたのですが、トーゴの潜在的購入者についてはその存在を確認することができませんでした。アフリカでは商業詐欺があるようなので、商談のリスクについて理解する必要があります。しかし、ソーラー・クッカーに関しての情報が手に入る限りは、SCJの代表として、私としては出来る限りその情報をSCJの支援者の方に提供していきたいと考えています。
3. Box cooker supply to a cooking school in Rwanda／ルワンダの料理学校へのボックス・クッカーの提供
– My wife and I asked a local technician to produce one box cooker, and we tried to let it be used by cooking course students at a vocational school in Kigali, Rwanda called the ‘New Hope’. However, the locally made cooker could not concentrate heat in the cooker and the students could not use it well. Thus, we brought it back home and were to find out how to solve the problem. However, we faced a serious car accident in mid-July and we could not find time to test the cooker and figure out the solution. As we are recovered well from the accident now, we are going to retry to make the box cooker functioning. During the trial, we might ask technical advice to the SCJ supporters.／妻と私は、地元の技術者にボックス・クッカーを一つ作るように依頼し、「ニュー・ホープ」というルワンダのキガリ市にある職業訓練校の調理コースの生徒に使ってもらおうとしました。ところが、地元製作のクッカーは、クッカー内への蓄熱ができず、生徒がうまく使えませんでした。そのため、家に持ち帰り問題を解決する方法を見付けようとしていました。ところが７月中旬に深刻な交通事故に遭遇してしまい、クッカーをテストし、解決策を探る時間がありませんでした。今は交通事故から十分快復したため、クッカーが機能するよう再度試みてみようと思います。その間、SCJの支援者の方に技術的な助言をお願いするかもしれません。
4. Potential of the panel cooker in Rwanda／ルワンダでのパネル式クッカーの可能性
– In the eastern part of Rwanda, the precipitation is relatively of a small amount. Also, the communities’ key nutrient is cow milk and they seem to be adding water sometimes when the milk availability is scarce. In this point, I am thinking that maybe even the panel cooker might work well to support the community to obtain hygienic diluted milk. Actually, some NGOs are already training local people how to produce and use the panel cooker in the Eastern Province. I would like to start the research and find out the potential in 2009. I bought a ‘leisure sheet’ with a metallic surface and some clips in Tokyo for 100 yen per piece last September when we are back to Japan, so, if these materials are useful in Rwanda, the production cost should be very cheap. Even we would be able to produce the cooker by locally available materials. I will report the research results when they are ready.／ルワンダの東部は、雨量が比較的少ないです。また、住民の主な栄養源は牛乳であり、牛乳の入手が難しい時は水を足しているようです。この点から私は、パネル型のクッカーでも住民が衛生的な薄めた牛乳を手に入れるのに役立つかもしれないと考えています。実際、東部州でパネル型クッカーの作り方と使用法を住民に訓練しているNGOが既にあるようです。2009年は、関連調査を実施してその可能性について調べたいと思います。昨年９月に帰国した際、金属が表面加工されているレジャー・シートとクリップを東京でそれぞれ100円で買ったので、もしこれらの素材がルワンダで有効であれば、製造コストはとても安くなるはずです。地元の材料で作ることも可能でしょう。進展がありましたら、調査の結果について皆さんにご報告します。

As mentioned above, most of the activities did not move forward due to our car accident. My wife and I would like to re-start the activities and send the SCJ supporters more productive report at the end of this year.／上述のとおり、活動のほとんどは交通事故に遭ったために進展しませんでした。妻と私は活動を再開し、本年末にはSCJの支援者の方々により成果の出ている報告をさせていただきたいと思います。
